Developer takes on medical centre

- QUENTIN TOD

DAVID Cherry, a developer on the Gold Coast for more than 30 years, is moving outside his knitting and building a medical and office centre.

The two-level building is under way in Ashmore Rd, Benowa, and is expected to be completed within six months.

The 1034sq m site was bought by Cherry Holdings for $900,000 in 2015.

Mr Cherry said the site was effectively in the Pindara medical precinct.

“That precinct has spilled over into Ashmore Rd in the last few years, with other medical properties developed east and west of our project,” he said.

“Our site is in a highly visible location, directly opposite the Benowa Gardens shopping centre, next door to a Shell service station, two doors down from a kindergarten, and a short distance from Pindara private hospital.

“Benowa has a large catchment area, with many homes nearby and three schools only a stroll from our property.”

Mr Cherry said the centre would have net lettable area of 600sq m and 24 car bays.

“Ideally, we’d like to see one tenant take the whole building and the naming rights.”

Mr Cherry, developing on the Gold Coast since the 1980s, has been involved in the Sandcastle apartments at Labrador, the Trilogy towers at Budds Beach, and luxury Allure highrise in the Surfers Paradise.

He is a partner with Richard Cavill in the planned redevelopment of the Cav’s Steakhouse site at Labrador.

That project involves a 12level apartment tower.
