Carlyle murder accused’s life of travel

- MELANIE PETRINEC

A GOLD Coast man accused of the execution-style slaying of businessman Philip Carlyle has holidayed all over the world since his death 20 years ago, according to an application for bail.

Neil Pentland, 69, was charged in June with the murder of Philip Carlyle – who was shot in the head four times in his Robina office in April, 1997.

The pair owned an IT company together and it is alleged it was in strife before 48-yearold Mr Carlyle’s death, which resulted in a payout from a $500,000 life insurance policy.

Police will also allege Pentland was paranoid Mr Carlyle was planning to move to the US with new technology patents.

Pentland has applied for bail in the Brisbane Supreme Court and revealed in an affidavit he “had in excess of 30 trips overseas” since Mr Carlyle’s death.

He said he travelled to the US, UK, and Singapore for work and pleasure.

Pentland went on “a prize” holiday to Malaysia and also holidayed in Europe and New Zealand. Japan was listed as a work-only destination.

He said he even spent six months overseas after giving evidence at two Crime and Corruption Commission hearings examining the case in November last year. He travelled to the US in January and February 2017 for a trade show and staff training, then did the same in the UK in March.

He said he gave three interviews to police in the past 20 years. The application will be heard in Brisbane on Friday.
