Kangaroo leads hunt for Tweed coach gig

- CONNOR O’BRIEN connor.obrien@news.com.au

FROM a former Test star to a junior coach, Tweed Heads have garnered no shortage of interest for their 2018 Queensland Cup top job.

The Seagulls have already received about 35 resumes and are expecting further at the last minute before applications close later today.

It’s understood among those to have registered interest are multiple former NRL players, including an ex-Australian representative.

At the other end of the profile spectrum are the likes of an under-16s coach from the Sunshine Coast, hoping to earn their big break.

Seagulls chief executive Scott Clark (right) was tightlipped on names but revealed that the person selected to succeed long-time coach Aaron Zimmerle won’t necessarily be the applicant with the most glittering resume.

“It may be a case that the successful candidate may not have the best resume on paper, but what we see as the best fit for our club,” Clark said.

“There are definitely plenty of options and we have a big decision to make.”

The club don’t have the resources of competition powerhouses led by Redcliffe and will have to punch above their weight in order to return to their glory days, such as winning the 2007 Queensland Cup premiership.

Clark noted uncertainty surrounding the second-tier competition’s 2018 funding model had somewhat delayed the overall process.

Tweed return from a week off to play Easts Tigers on Sunday at Langlands Park.

The Seagulls need at least one more win this season to avoid the wooden spoon.
