DISCOVER MAGIC OF THE MOUNTAIN
Waterfalls, wildlife, glow worms ...Tamborine has it all
GLOW worms, platypus and the wonder of waterfalls … Tamborine is the original magic mountain.
Sample all of the above plus a few more of the natural secrets of this hillside hamlet with a walk to Curtis Falls that showcases the lasting legacy of volcanic eruptions more than 23 million years ago.
The 1.5km return hike to the bottom of the falls is accessed via more than 100 steps. While the walk may not take more than 30 minutes, you’ll need more than double that to soak in the view at the bottom.
The track starts from the Dapsang drive carpark and meanders downhill through wet eucalypt forest beneath towering flooded gums.
Halfway down, take advantage of the viewing platform on the left, allowing rainforest views towards the creek below. Listen for the call of the elusive Albert’s lyrebird – winter months are best to hear the almost-extinct male bird’s ability to mimic other birds.
Feel the temperature drop as you descend into lush rainforest and look out for beautiful crows nests and staghorn ferns growing in the canopy.
At the bottom, turn left to reach Curtis Falls. The falls run all year round, but are at their most spectacular after heavy rain. The track ends at a viewing platform overlooking a large rock pool, with great views of the falls and surrounding columnar basalt rock face.
Look closely at the pool’s surrounds – below the falls live a fragile glow-worm colony, while platypus are also known to frolic here. Just remember, despite the temptation to swim in the crystal waters, going beyond the viewing platform is strictly prohibited.
