Saints in reno miracle for cancer victim Peter

- DWAYNE GRANT dwayne.grant@news.com.au

SELLING his home to fund a likely third battle with cancer was always going to be emotional for Peter McNeight.

Then along came footy club Carrara Saints to tip him over the edge.

“It’s just overwhelming,” the 56-year-old said of the random act of kindness that will see about 15 strangers undertake the ultimate renovation rescue of his Carrara property this weekend.

“We’ve always helped others but never received and then along came Corey to make this happen.”

What will happen on Sunday would be a run-of-themill working bee if not for the touching tale that precedes it.

Less than a week ago Peter and wife Sandra met PRDnationwide’s Corey Robb-Gwynne to discuss selling their home of 17 years.

Having tackled lymphoma and bowel cancer in the past six years, doctors have now found a lump in Peter’s throat.

“They’re doing tests on Monday to see if it’s throat cancer,” he said. “That’s my new hurdle.”

As is the couple’s financial situation.

“We’d been talking about it for a while but we’ve finally faced the reality,” Peter said of having to sell their home.

And that’s where Corey’s Facebook post comes in.

“I wanted to do everything I could to help because they’re clearly struggling,” said the real estate consultant, who happens to play for Division 3 AFL club Carrara Saints.

“I posted about a working bee on the club’s Facebook page ... (and) we had 15 guys put up their hands to help.

“Peter and Sandra teared up when I told them ... but we just want to help.”

“We’ve never heard those words in our life,” Sandra said. “It was hard for us to say yes (to Corey’s offer) but now I understand how it is for (people) we help. We do it to see the smiles on their faces and now Corey and the boys are seeing a smile on ours.” dire
