Rapper charged

NEW YORK: One of the founding members of the 1980s hip hop group Grandmaste­r Flash and The Furious Five has been arrested in New York in connection with the fatal stabbing of a homeless man. Police say 57-year-old Nathaniel Glover, also known as The Kidd Creole, was arrested yesterday on murder charges.

Probe into fraud

CARACAS: Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro postponed by 24 hours the launch of a powerful new assembly in the face of claims of fraud. Attorney General Luisa Ortega said she has opened an investigat­ion into “scandalous” electoral fraud after the British technology firm contracted to handle the vote said Maduro had exaggerate­d the turnout.

Temer survives

BRASILIA: Brazil’s lower house of Congress has voted to reject a corruption charge against President Michel Temer for allegedly taking bribes, saving him from facing a possible Supreme Court trial. Mr Temer and his legal team have denied any wrongdoing.

Climate study shock

NEW DELHI: Venturing outdoors may become deadly across wide swaths of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh by the end of the century as climate change drives heat and humidity to new extremes, according to a new study. The study – published in the journal Science Advances – considered temperatur­e projection­s, humidity and the body’s ability to cool down.

Matthews pulls pin

WELLINGTON: New Zealand’s Auditor-General has resigned amid questions over how he handled a fraud case while he was head of the nation’s transport agency. Martin Matthews yesterday said it was untenable for him to continue.
