Schools targeted by arsonists

-

TWO fires which caused damage to primary schools in Mermaid Waters and Clear Island Waters are being treated as suspicious by Gold Coast detectives.

On Wednesday night, emergency services were called to the school on Oceanic Drive at Mermaid Waters around 7.20pm where they located a small fire in one of the classrooms.

On Friday night, emergency services were called to a school on Fairway Drive at Clear Island Waters around 9.15pm after reports of a small fire inside a classroom.

Initial investigations indicate that in both cases, paper or another flammable material was pushed under the classroom doors and set alight.

Luckily, there was no structural damage as the fires were extinguished quickly, however some smoke damage has occurred as a result of both fires.

It is believed the two schools targeted were Miami State School and St Vincent’s Primary School.
