Girlfriend ‘held captive’

A 26-year-old man is expected to face court today accused of holding his 21-year-old ex-girlfriend captive inside a Murwillumbah home.

Police responded to reports a woman was locked up at about 9.30am yesterday and rushed to the scene where they arrested a 26-year-old, who was charged with assault occasioning bodily harm and breaching an apprehended violence order (AVO).

Tweed Byron Local Area Command crime manager Detective Inspector Brendon Cullen said he was thrilled with how his officers handled what was a potentially difficult job.

“We had a situation this morning where a person has detained a female against her will,” he said. “We’ve arrested that person and secured the victim.”

The man is expected to appear before Tweed Heads Local Court today.
