Golf club’s future left swinging

-

THE future of the Helensvale golf course is up in the air after the Gold Coast City Council requested a report for the future uses of the area.

Leasee Jigsaw had told the council they did not want to continue with their lease when it expires in June next year due to financial issues.

The council yesterday voted to explore other uses for the area including sports fields or parklands.

“Upon the unconditional surrender of the current lease, the land be maintained minimally as natural area with a report to be brought back on the potential future use as multi-use community sports fields, parkland and associated endeavours,” the resolution reads.

Last week the Community Services committee had voted to find a new leasee for the golf club. Mayor Tom Tate yesterday put forward the amendment to reconsider the use of the course, built at the lowest part of Helensvale.

Helensvale councillor William Owen-Jones said he would prefer the land to remain as a golf course.

“It’s important for the people of Helensvale that the public remain the owners of the golf course reserve, in particular the park which provides a drainage function,” he said.
