PAGEANT QUEEN’S GLOBAL AMBITION
A TALLEBUDGERA pageant queen has taken out the national title of Miss Global Australia.
Sophia Harris beat out 25 other girls to claim the crown at QT Gold Coast last week.
“I’ve been in the pageant world for quite a while, it’s such a confidence booster and you meet like-minded people who want to make a difference,” the 23-year-old said.
“I will be flying to Cambodia in November for the International Final with girls from all over the world.
“If I win I will have a platform to make a difference in the world and the opportunity to be a role model.”
The former St Andrews College student said the competition was fierce.
“Applications opened a few months ago and the first step was a phone interview with the director Lucinda Ferguson,” she said.
“We were asked a lot of questions, including what we thought was the most important environmental issue.
“When I was told I was a Queensland finalist I started preparing for Nationals Week, which was being held on the Gold Coast this year.
“We were judged on swimwear, evening wear, a national costume, photogenic judging and community involvement.”
Ms Harris, who is at Griffith University studying primary education, said her ‘national costume’ was created by Prep and Year One students.
“The kids at the school where I did work experience recently helped create my costume which reflected the beach and the Commonwealth colours because we have the Games coming up next year,” she said.
“Miss Global stands out to me against other pageants because of the charity and community aspect ... I’ve been working with the Starlight Children’s Foundation which is very close to my heart.”
