Stranger danger warning

-

POLICE want to speak to a young boy who was approached by a man driving a white 4WD in West Tweed Heads on Tuesday afternoon.

A witness saw the pair talking about 5.15pm on Golden Dr outside the Seagulls Club.

The bearded man drove off suddenly as the witness approached. The boy appeared shaken and said he did not know the man, who was in a Nissan Patrol or Toyota LandCruiser.

Tweed Heads crime manager Detective Inspector Brendon Cullen said police were keen to talk to the victim, who has not yet contacted police, and to identify the man.

“When it comes to children being approached by people they don’t know, we take it very seriously, we're here to protect the vulnerable,” he said.

“It’s timely to remind parents and children not to talk to strangers and encourage children to talk to parents.”

Det Insp Cullen said “child approaches” happened from time to time and while some could be innocent, all were treated as serious until proven otherwise.

The man was described as caucasian, aged between 50 to 60 with a full bushy beard, greyish brown short hair and wearing a white collared shirt.

The child appeared to be a 12 or 13 years old, about 150-155cm tall, of a slightly larger build and with short blonde hair.

Anyone with information can contact Tweed Heads Police on 5506 9499 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 anonymously.
