LEISHMAN IN FORM FOR MAJOR BREAKTHROUGH
MARC Leishman is hoping to top off his best season on the US PGA Tour by winning his first major title at this week’s PGA Championship.
Leishman has been the form Australian on tour this year with his victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March among five top-10s and 12 top-25s from 20 events.
“With the win and the consistency I’ve experienced from the start of the season in October until now, it’s definitely been my best year,” the 33-year-old Leishman said.
The Victorian has been a contender at the majors during the past few years, with his best result a runner-up finish at the 2015 British Open, when he lost in a playoff to Zach Johnson at St Andrews.
And after sharing sixth place at last month’s British Open at Royal Birkdale, Leishman feels ready to take the next step on golf’s biggest stage.
“I think a major title or the ($US10 million) FedEx Cup is probably the only way this year can get better. We play for the majors and this is the only one left this year,” Leishman said.
But first, Leishman needs to vanquish his demons at North Carolina’s Quail Hollow course.
He has played the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow three times, missing the cut once and finishing 48th and 65th.
With the course undergoing several design changes, Leishman is confident of turning around an unhappy hunting ground since last playing the venue in 2012.
