Kevvie not in running for Coast coaching role

-

QUEENSLAND coach Kevin Walters has ruled out any interest in the Gold Coast job, and has lashed Titans players for leaving besieged Neil Henry in the firing line.

Walters has not given up hope of one day launching his career as an NRL club coach, but he says the Queensland side is his sole priority and has urged Titans hierarchy not to make Henry a scapegoat.

Walters would be the perfect fit for the Titans as a Queensland legend, but the Maroons coach has backed Henry, a former Origin assistant to Mal Meninga, to resurrect the Gold Coast.

“I would like to coach in the NRL one day, but I don’t think that time is now,” Walters told the Queenslanders Only program on Fox League last night.

“I really believe that. There is more work I have to do with the Queensland side with the transition of some of our players. There’s no position (at the Titans), and I hope the Coast stick by Neil.

“The last two years have been injury-riddled for the Titans and his assistants Terry Matterson and Craig Hodges are good staff.

“Club coaching is a different gig and the week-to-week grind can be very conusming. After Origin I this year, people wanted to sack me.

“I really enjoy the Origin job and we won it this year so I am still on a high with all of that. I’m going to keep coaching Queensland. I haven’t signed as yet, but negotiations have opened up.”

Walters issued a challenge the Titans’ senior leadership group to take a leaf from the Queensland team and take responsibility for their performances.
