Vandals hit charity for third time

- LEA EMERY

A PARADISE POINT charity is at its wit’s end after a group of vandals kicked down their Colorbond fence for the third time in about four months.

Meals on Wheels volunteers arrived at their Bourke Ave headquarters yesterday to find a panel of the fence had been kicked down.

The attack meant volunteers had to once again fix the fence themselves in order to protect their building.

General manager Michelle Harrison said the group chose to fix the fence themselves in order to avoid the $1000 excess charge on their insurance.

“Every time we fix it, it looks even more worse for wear,” Ms Harrison said.

“It’s starting to become a problem.”

Ms Harrison said the volunteers believed it was teenagers in the area who were attacking the fence which was why they did not report it to police on the first two occasions.

She said police were contacted yesterday afternoon.

The fence was first kicked over during the Easter long weekend before being attacked again in May and finally on Wednesday night.

As well as the damaged fence, she said volunteers were also regularly faced with broken glass bottles and cigarette butts which they needed to clean from their yard.

Ms Harrison said this took from the volunteers’ time to deliver meals.

The group is not sure what else they can do to protect the fence as they were unable to afford security cameras.
