WE’RE WALKING IN A WINTER SWELTER-LAND
THIRTY-DEGREE heat predicted early next week could make winter a distant memory for Gold Coasters with unseasonably warm weather set to continue beyond the weekend.
With tops of 27 degrees today and tomorrow and 25 for Sunday, Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Sam Campbell said things could really heat up next week.
“We are forecasting well above average temperatures,” he said.
“(But) It really just depends on the timing of that sea breeze.”
Mr Campbell said the unseasonably warm weather was due to high pressure systems shifting from inland out towards the sea.
While next week is tipped to be warmer than the 22 degree average for the Coast at this time of year, it is not expected to beat records.
“In 2009 we had a bunch of very warm days around southeastern Queensland and parts of the southeast got above 35 so it’s not unusual to see quite warm days through August but it certainly is true that it’s well above average,” he said.
The meteorologist said there would be little joy for Gold Coast surfers in the next week.
“There’s no major swell-generating systems moving through the southern oceans or out through the Pacific so generally, roughly benign swell conditions are forecast,” he said.
