TIMING CRITICAL TO CORRECT PROBLEM

-

OPTOMETRY Australia’s Luke Arundel has a vital message for parents worried their child may have a turned eye – time is of the essence.

“We only get a limited window to fix it,” he said.

“When you have one eye looking ahead and the other in a different direction, the brain sees two images and starts to ignore the image you’re getting from the turned eye and that leads to your brain shutting it off.

“We can get around with one eye but we don’t get as good depth perception, which will affect coordination and ultimately things like driving and career choice.

“If you straighten the turned eye, the brain relays that pathway to get clear vision in that eye. You want to be treating the issue before a child is about 10.”
