Suns to prove worth for a coach

- TOM BOSWELL tom.boswell@news.com.au

SUNS leader Touk Miller says the onus is on the playing group to attract the best coach available to the Gold Coast in the final weeks of the year.

Whoever becomes the third full-time coach of the Gold Coast will be adopting one of the greatest challenges in AFL in the wake of Rodney Eade’s sacking last week..

Miller said it was up to the Gold Coast players to give the club the best possible chance at getting the right man for the job in the final two games of the season against Essendon and Port Adelaide.

“If I was a coach I’d be wanting a group that wants to win a premiership,” he said.

“We have to prove that and in order to attract a coach we need to be playing good football or at least show the desire to play good football.

“I know in the four walls that we are a professional club and building something spe-

cial but it’s not showing out on the ground. I think for now we really want to focus on the next two weeks and making sure we put in an effort that is a lot better than last time.”

Miller also said the players were on notice to show who deserved to remain at the club and in its best 22 in 2018.

“There are a lot of people probably playing for spots or playing for their careers in some sense,” Miller said.

Miller was among Gold Coast’s best in their 22.10 (142) to 12.12 (84) loss to Brisbane in front of 17,772 at the Gabba on Saturday in what was their second QClash defeat this season. The 21-year-old recorded 29 disposals, 17 contested, nine clearances, four inside 50s and a goal.

Miller revealed the team took a new approach of catching a bus together up the M1 in a bid to galvanise the group after a week of turmoil but were left with a bitter taste in their mouths after being run over by the Lions.

“We came out on a mission,” Miller said.

“We were really trying to make a statement going up there. (The loss) leaves a very bitter taste with the whole team, the club and probably the fans as well.”
