Titans’ time to stop the rot

- BRAD RICKS

THE Gold Coast Titans went all in on Jarryd Hayne – and they have taken a hit.

This ugly saga with Hayne and Titans coach Neil Henry was one perhaps the club should have seen coming.

Henry is a head-strong coach who treats his players equally.

From the rookie Queensland Cup kid to his $1.2 million superstar ... everyone must play by the same rules.

This is not how Hayne rolls.

The tales out of Parramatta about the uber-talented Hayne enjoying the rockstar ride given to him by coaches and officials have been coming thick and fast.

At his best he is one of the game’s elite talents. He is clearly aware of his abilities and standing as a two-time Dally M winner.

The Hayne and Henry combination as a result resembles oil and water.

So here we are today with the club’s hierarchy calling a crisis meeting to sit down the two main men and attempt to thrash this issue out.

This may well result in Hayne walking out on his rich contract. Or maybe Henry will be shown the door.

Hell ... maybe both could go or we end up no further along in this sorry scenario.

Who would know after the week we have had here on the Coast? Whatever the result, the damage is already done.

Yet again the Titans brand is suffering from a real black eye, unwanted attention and headlines and questions about the decision-making process at the club.

The rugby league public has watched this squabble play out, even if those around the club felt not commenting on it was in some way going to hide it.

And it sends a message that the Titans are a club that seems to lurch from one crisis to the next.

The time has come for the Titans board to stop the rot.

Chairwoman Rebecca Frizelle is a smart businesswoman and a strong leader.

She would know the damage that this spat is doing to the Titans.

This issue needs to come to and end and fast.

The board must act and either back Henry or press on with Hayne.

There is nothing to be gained by allowing this situation to continue festering. Rip the Band-aid off and push forward one way or another.

Prove to fans that this is a club with strength and one that is bigger than any superstar or struggle.

Stop giving those who would see the Titans fail any further ammunition to suggest this is a club that can’t get its act together.

THERE IS NOTHING TO BE GAINED BY ALLOWING THIS SITUATION TO CONTINUE FESTERING ...
