COAST CHEERLEADER SQUAD’S GOLDEN LEAP YEAR

- MEGAN BIROT

THIS group of young “allstars” have plenty to cheer about.

The Burleigh Heads ZACS Allstars cheer team beat thousands of others to claim six gold medals at this month’s AASCF All Star Battle Championships.

The squad’s junior four team scored the highest points (91/100) for stunts, tumbling and presentation.

“We had eight-year-old kids to 20-something-yearolds working together in perfect harmony,” head coach Ashleigh Dent said.

“We did better than some bigger cheer clubs that have 300 kids because we train consistently week in and week out.”

The ZACS Allstars cheer team had competitors as young as four in the championships.

Payton Legat, 13, who has been cheerleading for three years, said there was more to the sport than meets the eye.

“Cheerleading is not your typical ‘give an A scenario’ you see in movies,” she said.

“The cheer team is a big family and we do work hard on techniques and choreography.”

The ZACS Allstars will compete in the Australasian Pinnacle Cheer and Dance Championship in Melbourne on November 27.
