I WOULD like to thank the workers who cleared the medium strip of trees opposite the Varsity Lakes train station on the M1 ready for future road works.
On November 7, 2010, my son died when his motorcycle collided with a B-double.
In memoriam his mates erected this tribute to his life by welding two crankshafts together in the form of a cross. The chain from his bike was welded into a heart on that cross.
As I drove past this week I noticed that all the trees were gone and I expected to see his little cross had been removed.
Someone in that group of workers made a decision to not only
leave the cross there but also to poison the grass around it.
I know the M1 needs upgrading and life goes on but thank you whoever you are for the kind act. JAN RILEY, TWEED HEADS WEST I SHARE the opinion of many Gold Coasters in thinking the Southport Spit is a special place that shouldn’t be ruined by overdevelopment.
Firstly, I wish to congratulate Annastacia Palaszczuk on her recent decision against the ASF cruise ship terminal and casino development, which would have been devastating for the environment.
I don’t want to see The Spit taken over by tall buildings and have the beach lost due to the dredging that would be required to make a channel for cruise ships.
I wish to propose instead that The Spit become an eco-friendly licensed camping area which will also address the current problem of the “free campers”.
If the area became a controlled camping ground, the council could approve the building of small coffee shops and restaurants. I believe if there are so many free campers in the area, it is a sign people want to be able to camp there.
If we opened it up to the public and charged a small camping fee, that money could go towards maintaining it and keeping it clean and tidy for people to enjoy.
My proposal will mean there is still the tourism factor at The Spit but there would be no large scale environmental impact and this precious asset would not be lost.
There should be regular cleanups as the camping zone is so close to the water and we cannot afford to pollute the water.
I want the council and state government to take this proposal into consideration instead of over-developing and destroying our Spit. HARRISON TIPPETT, GOLD COAST DOES anyone think it’s time that bring back the cane? This was effectively used in the past to stop goons and bullies. LINDA BRUCE I TOTALLY agree with the observations of Scotty Sattler and Lydia Robinson (GCB, 15/8), Jarryd Hayne is divisive and not worth the money. Get rid of him, the sooner the better.
Word to the wise, Ash Taylor, drop him like a hot spud. He’s nothing but trouble. Look to your own future. PETER MOY
