Fears Gaz has played last game as Sun on Coast

- TOM BOSWELL

GARY Ablett may have played his last game on the Gold Coast for the Suns.

The dual Brownlow Medallist has been ruled out of Gold Coast’s last home game of the season this Saturday against Essendon as he continues to battle a hamstring injury.

“I don’t think he’ll be available for this weekend but we’re holding some hope for our last game against Port Adelaide,” Suns football manager Marcus Ashcroft said last night.

Uncertainty still surrounds the future of Ablett who hasn’t ruled out requesting another trade back to Geelong or retiring at the end of the year despite being contracted until the end of 2018.

Ablett has played six of the past 12 games for Gold Coast between shoulder, calf and hamstring problems.

Pearce Hanley looks set to return from a hamstring injury but Sean Lemmens and Dan Currie’s seasons are over.

Lemmens injured his ankle against Brisbane last weekend and will undergo surgery while Currie broke his foot in the same game and had an operation on Monday.

“Dan toughed the night out on Saturday,” Ashcroft said.

“He hurt his foot early in the game, soldiered through, but unfortunately did break a bone in his foot.

“He had surgery on Monday night where they inserted a pin, he won’t play this week nor the following week.”

Currie’s injury has left the Suns without any of their three top-line ruckman going into the final two games of the season against Essendon and Port Adelaide.

Jarrod Witts played the first 19 games of the year before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury while an ankle problem is expected to keep Tom Nicholls out for at least another week.

Gold Coast could be forced to move tall forward Peter Wright into the position fulltime in the coming weeks to remain competitive.

Wright has been pinchhitting in the ruck.
