LOCKY URGES ASH TO TAKE LEAD FOR TITANS IN TURMOIL

- – PETER BADEL AND TRAVIS MEYN

QUEENSLAND legend Darren Lockyer has challenged Ashley Taylor to take on more responsibility, saying his evolution as a leader is the next phase in the Titans young gun’s development.

Superstar recruit Jarryd Hayne will miss tonight’s clash against former club Parramatta with an ankle injury, putting more pressure on halfback Taylor to orchestrate an upset at ANZ Stadium.

Many a promising rookie has fallen victim to secondyear syndrome but Taylor has kicked on, maintaining the rage that saw him clinch NRL rookie-of-the-year honours last season.

While the 22-year-old has been the shining light in a Titans’ season of disaster, Lockyer believes Taylor is only scratching the surface.

“Ash Taylor has immense potential and I’d like to see him stepping up a bit more,” Lockyer said.

“I know he is only young but he has to start involving himself as a leader.

“He manages the game for them and if he takes ownership as a leader off the field as well, he can have a real influence on the entire squad and the club’s performances.

“I know some people might think it’s too much to ask of Ash at his age, but he’s played two years of NRL now and I believe he’s ready for the next challenge of leadership.”
