WHAT BUGS US
IT’S an argument not unlike that used to explain the benefits of vaccinations.
Just as herd immunity is the hero in stopping diseases that once killed Australians, so too is the rabbit-proof fence protecting large parts of farmland in inland southern Queensland a hero in protecting crops and the hip-pockets of consumers.
The cost of the fence is negligible compared to what would happen if rabbits reached the plague proportions that once decimated crops and the environment. Our city should not whinge about its $117,000 annual contribution. If anything, we should be demanding an extension east of the fence to guard against rabbits that have the run of the area near Kingscliff.
