Keras lands league top gong

-

SOUTHPORT have finally been given something to smile about after rugged midfielder Jordan Keras was named NEAFL most valuable player.

Keras, 23, won the coveted award at a tense vote count in Brisbane last night, surprisingly picking up nine votes in the final round against Canberra on Saturday.

Even more surprising is the fact the former Geelong district player won the MVP despite Southport claiming just four wins in a club-worst year.

Keras was four votes behind

NT Thunder star Cameron Ilett going into the final round.

Keras finished with 78, Ilett 73 and Zac O’Brien (Sydney University) on 73.

Keras was named in the NEAFL team of the year which also included Suns players Ryan Davis, Darcy Macpherson and Mitch Hallahan.

Southport’s year from hell ended with a 14.12 (96) to 12.12 (90) loss to third-bottom Canberra at Fankhauser Reserve.

The Sharks came from 15 points down at three-quarter time after trailing by 26 at the first break but ran out of time.

Small forward Rob Clements kicked five for his side.
