Protest against planned casino

-

FORMER Gold Coast City councillor Eddy Sarroff and fellow residents of the Huntington and Windemere apartment blocks have vowed to oppose plans for a second Gold Coast casino resort on public land in Southport.

“The Mayor is out of order and he has crazy ideas and he is upsetting his local community,” Mr Sarroff said yesterday.

“Public open space is not for sale. If the Mayor (Tom Tate) wants to come up with visionary projects, don’t eye off the public land. The community will mount a strong argument against it.”

Mr Sarroff joined almost 40 mostly elderly Southport residents in Carey Park yesterday to co-ordinate a campaign to fight Cr Tate’s Plan B vision for a casino and resort on a 6.7 hectare site in Southport’s Priority Development Area.

The earmarked site includes council’s Carey Park and its 419-bay carpark and State-owned land that houses the Southport Bowls and Queens Park tennis clubs.
