Tweed water supplies restricted

-

TWEED Shire residents are on extreme water restrictions while council works to flush salt from a large water supply in the area.

Council released water from Clarrie Hall Dam to flush salt water out of Bray Park Weir after large high tides overtopped the weir wall on Monday night.

Tests were conducted overnight and were to continue into this morning to determine when the water supply would be fit for consumption.

Water and Wastewater manager Anthony Burnham said the release from the dam should be sufficient to hold back any salt water from the overnight high tide, which was expected to be 200mm above predictions.

As of Tuesday morning the confirmed total dissolved solids in the weir were 620mg/ litre.

Council has advised the North Coast Public Health Unit of the situation.

People with medical conditions, such as those using dialysis, are advised to contact their usual medical provider for advice. Residents are asked not to use any water for outdoor uses such as gardening or washing cars.
