Junior champ to make WSL debut

-

WORLD junior champion Macy Callaghan will make her World Surf League debut next week after securing the wildcard position for California’s Swatch Pro at Lower Trestles.

The 16-year-old will be thrown in the deep end, facing world champ Tyler Wright and 2016 rookie of the year Keely Andrew in her Round 1 heat.

But the test doesn’t faze the NSW Central Coast surfer.

“I am honoured and over the moon,” Callaghan said.

“This year has been filled with many ups-and-downs so when I got the call up ... I literally sat there and cried. For this event, I am really focusing on having a good time and surfing the best that I can.

“To be able to surf against the best female surfers in the world and to see what it is like to compete at the highest level will be an amazing experience.”

WSL women’s commissioner Jessi Miley-Dyer said she was excited.

“I selected Macy because she is close to qualifying for the championship tour (CT) and she has never surfed in a CT event,” she said.

“She is a future star.”
