GOLD COAST WRAP WITH UBET’S NICOLE THOMAS
WINNERS
■ The biggest plunge of the day was on Whypeeo. The Toby Edmonds-trained galloper was $3.80 in to $2.50 and he redeemed himself after being beaten as favourite last start. The three-year-old hit the lead approaching the turn and showed an explosive turn of foot to destroy them. ■ Punters steamed in to Tycoon
Ace at $3.70 (after deductions) and he started $2.80. The race was over when the Tony Searstrained galloper crossed them easily to lead from the wide gate and he gave nothing else a chance.
■ Punters were wary Of The
Day couldn’t make it back-toback wins, so they rejected the $2.60 offered early and she drifted out to $3.25. The fouryear-old came widest in the straight and the way she let down to round them up, couldn’t have been more impressive.
LOSERS
The Matthew Dunn-trained
Londehero was equal favourite and drifted from $4 out to $4.80 until the punters became keen, and he started $4.60. The seven-year-old pulled out wide before the turn and although finished well, had too much ground to make up.
■ Last start winner Shogun Sun was heavily tried, $3.80 in to $2.80. There were more big bets on this horse than on any other, with one punter unloading $2000 at the $4.20. The three-year-old needed them to go just a little bit quicker. He travelled well from the back and made up enormous ground in the straight, just not enough to beat Whypeeo.
NEXT TIME
The Kris Lees-trained
Sarajevo drifted from $4.40 out to $5.50 but punters then crunched him right back in to $4.40. The six-year-old settled second last, pushed out three wide in the straight but had to go back to the inside. He made up plenty of ground but was not fully tested.
■ Malkara was expected to perform well despite being up in grade and punters backed him from $7 in to $6. The promising Michael Costa-trained gelding was caught very deep early and over-raced. Considering the tough run in transit, he stuck on super and was not knocked about. Follow him next start.
