SURFERS Paradise’s image as a safe destination has been trashed yet again by idiots who can’t handle alcohol.

Police must have dreaded Sunday, knowing the usual moronic minority would use the televised Mayweather-McGregor fight to drink themselves stupid and start brawling. Tourism leaders meanwhile must dread the inevitable – and gleeful – national TV news coverage, reinforcing the wrong perception that Surfers is a no-go area full of violent thugs. By contrast, there were few problems at the Horn-Pacquiao bout at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium in July. The difference? Most in that crowd were genuine boxing fans, not idiots, and bars were shut once the boxers entered the ring.
