Born in in Jackson, Mississippi, Angie Thomas has always loved telling stories. The Hate U Give started as a short story during her senior year. Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, her powerful debut young adult novel holds a mirror to what prejudice looks like in the 21st Century. The Hate U Give is a gripping look into one girl’s struggle for justice and centres around Starr Carter, a black teenage girl living in a poor, black neighbourhood in inner-city America. Her life is up-ended when she is the sole witness to a police officer shooting her best friend, Khalil, who turns out to have been unarmed during the confrontation but may or may not have been a drug dealer. As Starr finds herself even more torn between the two vastly different worlds she inhabits, she also has to contend with speaking her truth and, in the process, trying to stay alive herself.

Thomas’ powerful storytelling shows what racism really looks like, who it hurts, and what can be done about it.

Since its US release in February, the book has topped the New York Times young adult fiction best sellers chart, selling more than 100,000 copies.

Film rights have been optioned by Fox 2000 and Temple Hill Productions with George Tillman attached to direct and Hunger Games actress Amandla Stenberg to star.
