Nic-Nat talks down hero bid

-

WEST Coast ruckman Nic Naitanui insists he won’t try to be “some sort of hero” by returning too early from his knee reconstruction.

It’s been more than a year since Naitanui tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and the 2012 All-Australian is nearing full fitness.

Eagles coach Adam Simpson has already ruled Naitanui out of the September 9 elimination final against Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval. But if the Eagles spring an upset and progress through to the semi-finals, it could put Naitanui back in the selection frame.

His chances would be bolstered more if West Coast make it to a preliminary final.

Naitanui said it would be “awesome” if he was able to play a part in West Coast’s finals campaign. But he will only play if he feels he can contribute.

“I don’t really want to come in and try to be some sort of hero, underdone when there’s someone who is fresh and has been playing some good footy all year – having to jeopardise their spot,” Naitanui said.

“I’ll be realistic with it ... and see how I progress through training over the next couple of weeks. I haven’t ruled it out.”
