YOU won’t need to wait until next year to see new trams on the Gold Coast — Aaron Coghill has already built one.

The 39-year-old Nerang man is putting the finishing touches on his Lego masterpiece — a scale replica of a Gold Coast light rail tram and station.

The tram features several hundred pieces in a recreation of the famous gold and blue paintjob of the rapid transit system. However, Mr Coghill’s commitment to accuracy meant the 1.1-metre showpiece needed special parts. “It has 114 specially curved yellow tiles to recreate the roof of the tram and I needed to source special ones of the right colour.

“A friend of mine has a special (3D) printer which created some of the bricks which have the G-Link logo, while a signwriter did the other logos which appear on the side. My friend also gave me the Surfers Paradise decal plates.”

Mr Coghill spent five months researching and designing the 1:40 scale tram and station, which also features small ticketing machines. ‘The tram is really iconic and when people see it, they know exactly what it is.”
