More Than Money is one for the ages

TRAINER Mel Eggleston isn’t putting an end date on More Than Money’s career following the eight-year-old’s sixth career win.

More Than Money secured his first victory in his current seven-run preparation on Saturday at the Gold Coast, winning the Sky Racing Class 5 Handicap (1200m) from barrier two with hoop Luke Rolls on board.

“It was a good run and I was really confident going in,” Eggleston said.

“He is consistent and he deserved the win.

“His runs have been good but he has just had no luck in his last couple.

“I really thought he would win (on Saturday) because he drew a good gate, it was a small field, he got the gun run and was probably fitter than a few of the others first-up.

“He ticked all the boxes.” The More Than Ready eight-year-old is out of Eggleston’s former stakes-winning mare Love And Money and despite being small the tough gelding has always produced for the Gold Coast trainer.

“He looked like being a real good horse but his size went against him a bit,” Eggleston said. “He is only tiny but you don’t see many that can gallop at that age.”

More Than Ready has been in work since February and his preparation began in April.

Eggleston usually allows him to rest for about three weeks between runs to keep him fresh.

Eggleston said More Than Money had shown he still had a fair bit of racing left in him.

“He is sound and never had a problem,” Eggleston said.

“While he is performing and paying his way we will keep him going.

“It’s not a daily grind with him and we mix it up a lot with him.”

Eggleston said he would look to put More Than Money in a similar race in the coming weeks and would keep Rolls on him following his success.

“He probably does need a strong rider and I think putting Luke back on him was a big difference,” Eggleston said.

More Than Money has now won six races and $134,455.
