Nikorima’s ready to replace Boyd

- TRAVIS MEYN

KODI Nikorima has emerged as Brisbane’s chosen one after Broncos captain Darius Boyd conceded he will miss Friday’s blockbuster final against the Roosters.

Boyd has undergone an injection into his injured hamstring after scans revealed he suffered a minor tear during last week’s final round derby win against the Cowboys.

The fickle nature of hamstring injuries means Boyd will be forced to sit out Friday’s major semi-final in Sydney where the Broncos will attempt to secure a preliminary final berth.

Nikorima, 23, will don Boyd’s No.1 jersey and slot into the fullback duties for the second time this season, allowing Benji Marshall to start at halfback. Nikorima was seen fielding a barrage of bombs during a secret training session at Red Hill yesterday under the watch of coach Wayne Bennett.

Boyd, who took no part in the session, said he had shifted his focus to Brisbane’s next final given the Broncos are assured a second chance.

“I think I’m more focused on next week,” he said.

“I don’t want to force it and rush it. Hammies are pretty hard to rush.

“I’d love to play but I wouldn’t want to not be 100 per cent either.

“There is a little tear there, but they are thinking it could respond pretty well with a needle.”
