Fiji player face a ‘earing over biting allegation

- JIM TUCKER www.goldcoastbulletin.com.au

FIJIAN hooker Samu Suguturaga is facing a ban for earbiting if allegations are proven at a judicial hearing at Ballymore tomorrow.

The Fijian Drua forward was cited after rival Brisbane City hooker Andrew Ready jerked his head quickly from a scrum on Saturday with blood flowing from puncture marks on his right ear. Ready instantly reported it to referee Damon Murphy and only played on in the 45-36 win after having his ear stitched.

The incident could not take the gloss from a number of excellent performances from City players.

Winger Ed Fidow was a sharp finisher for three tries, lock Lukhan Tui was full of strong ball-carries in his first match for three months, lock Kane Douglas played some of his most influential minutes of the season before flying to Perth with the Wallabies and winger Lachie Maranta made two veering breaks.

Ready and his City side are now gearing for a local derby against Queensland Country at 1pm at Saturday when the National Rugby Championship heads to Noosa.

Country still haven’t unlocked the knack to winning despite scoring six tries in last Saturday’s spirited 48-40 loss to the Vikings in Canberra.

Country captain Duncan Paia’aua scored the second of his tries off a half-break from new Reds back-row signing Liam Wright.

Country coach Brad Thorn was blunt: “You shouldn’t be losing games when you score 40-points so that comes down to our defence letting in some easy tries because there was good work out there for our tries.”

Yesterday, formers Reds squad flyhalf Mack Mason was the standout when the Greater Sydney Rams trumping the NSW Country Eagles 44-23 in Sydney.
