Holy guacamole
MEXICO CITY: A recipe requiring 25,000 avocados and 1000 people to mash them has produced a record-breaking guacamole. Avocado growers in Mexico’s Jalisco state mobilised on Sunday to break the world record for the biggest guacamole, a whopping three tonnes of delicious dip made from “green gold”. More than 600 student chefs and 400 people from the rural town of Concepcion de Buenos Aires prepared the traditional dish for thousands of people.
The state’s governor was on hand to receive recognition from a representative of the Guinness Book of World Records.
IS plot attempt
LONDON: An Islamic State agent tried to persuade an undercover reporter to carry out an attack on London Bridge, a year before eight were killed and dozens injured at the landmark, it has been claimed. A special report by BBC Inside Out London said one of its journalists was encouraged by the suspect to target London Bridge, suggesting he could do it alone or in a group. The BBC said the details bore striking similarities to the attack on London Bridge on June 3.
Blaze fears eased
LOS ANGELES: A smattering of rain and easing temperatures have helped more than 1000 firefighters battling the largest wildfire in Los Angeles history gain the upper hand on the blaze, but officials warned that danger remains. “We’ve turned the corner, but this is not over,” Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti told reporters on Sunday afternoon. More than 700 homes were evacuated as the blaze tore through thick brush that has not burned in decades. Of the 1400 people who evacuated from their homes, 90 per cent had returned by Sunday afternoon.
Hurricane watch
SAN JUAN: Government workers on the islands of the eastern Caribbean are clearing drains and pruning trees as authorities urge residents to prepare for Hurricane Irma, a Category 3 storm likely to begin buffeting that area tomorrow. The Antigua and Barbuda weather service said Irma was expected to bring heavy rains, rough surf and high winds.
