Sansbury the difference for Broady
THE Broadbeach Cats have secured a QAFL preliminary final berth, after beating the Morningside Panthers yesterday at Ord Minnet Oval 17.3 (105) to 10.11 (71).
A six-goal haul to former North Melbourne player Edward Sansbury was the difference in the end, with the Cats forward taking full advantage of every ball that came his way, kicking some impressive snaps in the process.
Xavier McMahon was also strong for Broadbeach with 25 disposals.
The Cats now look to next week’s preliminary final, where they’ll meet Labrador who suffered their first loss to Palm Beach Currumbin.
“It’s the first time (that we’ve made the preliminary final) since we’ve been in the QAFL,” Broadbeach coach Brett Andrews said.
“They’ve made history the boys, so now we’ve just got to go one more.
“He’s (Edward Sansbury) unreal isn’t he? I think he kept us in the game in the first quarter because we started slow.
“I think he’s played six games and he’s our highest goal kicker.”
Alastair Nash battled hard for the visiting side, collecting 28 disposals and laying four tackles, while Benjamin Murray was on song in the forward line, kicking four goals and taking some spectacular contested marks.
Morningside trailed by just 11 points at the last change and were within reach, but the Cats’ slick ball movement and speed proved too difficult for the Panthers to handle and they kicked away to a 34-point victory.
■ THE Brisbane Lions on Saturday celebrated a rare moment of success in an otherwise difficult season when the club won a heart-stopping NEAFL grand final by two points over Sydney at the SCG.
The lead changed 10 times in the first half before the Lions held off a determined Swans outfit in a gutsy 12.13 (85) to 10.22 (82) victory.
Lions midfielder Ben Keays claimed the Andrew Ireland Medal for best on ground.
