SWELL FESTIVAL KICKS OFF
The popular sculpture festival is gracing Currumbin Beach once again with plenty of fun and arty activities for all the family
THE golden sands of Currumbin Beach have been transformed into a landscape of interactive public, live entertainment, street food and unique artistic experiences for all ages, as SWELL Sculpture Festival celebrates 15 years on the Gold Coast in 2017.
Held from September 8 to 17, the free, family-friendly event features more than 50 sculptures along a 1km stretch of shoreline, complemented by a line-up of kids’ workshops.
Back by popular demand, artist Velvet Pesu will help children to design their own unique and colourful creations at the kids’ workshop Art to Move You during the SWELL Sculpture Festival.
Art to Move You is a space for self-expression, spontaneity and improvised interaction which has been described as an enriching experience of free play with a range of recycled materials.
The SWELL Kids Education Program, which includes Velvet Pesu’s kids’ workshops, is supported by the Doug Hall Foundation.
The foundation is also working with SWELL to support 53 students from the Coolangatta Primary School to attend special workshops.
The Doug Hall Foundation is a non-profit organisation that provides educational scholarships and bursaries.
Foundation organisers believe all young people have the right to be well-educated and the foundation seeks to support students who may not otherwise have the opportunity to reach their full potential.
For older students there are plenty of opportunities for everyone, whether you are a beginner or want to breathe new life into your artistic skills.
Learn sculpting techniques from a master at the Life Modelling Masterclass, hone your drawing skills as you visually traverse the human form at Life Drawing or capture the illusive qualities of sculpture in the outdoors with Plein Air Painting.
