HOMICIDE Squad detectives believed the man who shot dead a Brisbane bus driver at Carina during an armed holdup was on the Gold Coast.
And a Gold Coast gun dealer may have sold the rare type of bullet to the man who killed Eliseo Furlan, during the holdup by two men at the Carina bus depot a week earlier.
“They could be residents of the Gold Coast and may be circulating here,” said Detective Sergeant Greg Hay of the Brisbane Homicide Squad.
Det Sgt Hay was one of three detectives based on the Gold Coast during the investigation.
An uncommon rifle and its ammunition were two of the main leads in the investigation.
The third clue was the getaway car – a topaz green Mitsubishi Magna GLX with registration number 784 PIR.
The car’s distinctive features included a velvet black hood, brown and orange pin striping with black louvres on the rear widow and plastic protection on the front grill.
It was stolen from a Rainbow Bay carpark.
The murder weapon was a 32.20 Winchester lever-action rifle “which isn’t very common nowadays,” said Det Sgt Hay.
“The ammunition used was 32.20 Sako, copper coated snub-nose type which is also quite rare.”
“People would have to ask for it specifically and only a minority of dealers would carry it.
“People using that type of gun would probably be from a farm. It would be getting towards a collector’s item.”
Earl Shane Clements, was found guilty of the murder in 1992 and was sentenced to 13 years behind bars.
