Dermie’s dig over Port’s selections

HAWTHORN legend Dermott Brereton has joined the growing chorus of football greats to claim Port Adelaide blew its elimination final against West Coast at the selection table.

Five-times premiership forward Brereton said the Power made a massive selection mistake in leaving powerful and hardened free agent Jackson Trengove out of its team in preference for light-bodied teenager Todd Marshall, who was playing just his third game.

While Marshall, 18, had just 10 disposals and failed to kick a goal in the extra-time loss, Eagles intercept defender Jeremy McGovern dominated with 15 marks and used his bigger frame to push Marshall aside in marking contests.

“If I was on that (Port) board I’d be asking questions because I think that game went begging,” Brereton told SEN.

“McGovern dominated the game in the air and he played on a kid playing his third game in Marshall. If Trengove plays I guarantee you McGovern doesn’t take 15 marks and is best on ground.”

Brereton’s comments followed those of Crows great Mark Ricciuto, who also claimed the Power got it wrong.
