MOUNTAIN OF MULCH GOES UP IN SUSPICIOUS BLAZE

POLICE are questionin­g a person they believe could have started a large mulch fire that raged for much of the weekend on the northern fringe of the Gold Coast.

Fifteen thousand cubic metres of mulch went up in flames near the intersecti­on of Bernside Road and Rossmans Road, just north of Greyhound Road at Stapylton.

A fire is believed to have been lit early on Saturday morning.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoma­n said reports of the blaze were first made between 4am and 5am on Saturday.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Service spokeswoma­n said authoritie­s were still battling the blaze yesterday morning.

Excavators were used to contain the blaze.

The fire did not affect any homes.

Police investigat­ions are ongoing. No charges have been laid over the incident but officers are treating the fire as suspicious.
