RUNNING MATES DRIVEN TO HIGH-SPEED ACTION

- CONNOR O’BRIEN

JUST the thought of Surfers Paradise’s famous beach chicane brings Gold Coast athletes Will Davison and Michael Shelley to the edge of their seats.

Supercars speedster Davison’s eyes light up when asked about the daring stretch of racetrack that fans flock to every year.

“Dangerous, brutal and from a driver’s point of view bordering on a bit out of control to go fast through here,” the Tekno Autosports driver said.

“It’s one of the few spots where it seriously gets our attention … it’s just balls to the wall sort of stuff.”

Commonwealth Games men’s marathon medal hope Shelley plans to head along to the Gold Coast 600 in four weeks’ time and is often blown away by drivers’ commitment flying through the high-speed section. “I especially love the chicane because of just the skill that it takes,” he said.

“I can come here (to GC600) with my mates and have a complete, flat downtime which is great.”

The race weekend will be held across October 20-22.
