Maloney’s fight for Cup job
JAMES Maloney says he does not know where he stands in the race to wear the No.6 jersey at this year’s World Cup, given Michael Morgan is in career-best form.
The Cronulla playmaker auditioned for the role in the Prime Minister’s XIII 48-8 victory over PNG in Port Moresby on Saturday, scoring one try in a solid performance. But with Morgan in sensational form – and Cameron Munster also in contention – Maloney is unsure where he fits in with the Australian team.
He said he hopes to have a talk with coach Mal Meninga in the next week to get an idea of where he stands.
“I don’t really know where I stand now,” Maloney said after the PM’s XIII win.
“Morgs has had a really good year … he has played for a long time as well. It would be nice to get it but he’s obviously playing really good footy as well. That’s the challenge.
“There’s always competition and only one spot in the Australian side.”
