Garfoot’s world glory a silver shock
SHE hadn’t even been targeting the event but Australian Katrin Garfoot raced to a silver medal at the world road cycling championships in Norway.
The medal makes Garfoot Australia’s most successful rider at the championships after claiming bronze in her pet event, the individual time trial, last week.
The Gold Coast-based star’s silver in the 153km endurance test matches the best result by an Australian woman in the world road race, with Liz Tadich second in 1997, Anna Woods in 1999 and Rachel Neylan in 2012.
“It was a good feeling to sprint for silver, I actually surprised myself I guess,” the 35year-old said.
“The road race is always a bit of a lottery so I was glad I could mix it.
“It was always going to be tough against three Dutchies.
“In a race of seven, the odds were stacked against me. I am over the moon.”
Dutch rider Chantal Blaak finished 28sec ahead of Garfoot, who outsprinted Danish rider Amalie Dideriksen.
