HOON YOU KIDDING
PALM Beach-Currumbin football club has accepted responsibility for tens of thousands of dollars in damage done to a cricket pitch in what has been described as “out of control” grand final celebrations.
PBC Cricket Club officials were angry to discover as much as $60,000 in damage to their brand new pitch done by “idiots” who performed doughnuts at Salk Oval.
Social media photos emerged yesterday showing PBC Football Club players standing around a car in the middle of the oval.
Palm Beach-Currumbin Australian Football Club president Anne Cornish said the club accepted responsibility for the damage, believed to have been done during celebrations of the club’s QAFL grand final win over Labrador.
“We won on Saturday and it occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning,” she said.
“We’ll take full responsibility. It was a football club function. We’ll pay for the damage to rectify the pitch.
“We don’t have any individuals to pinpoint but we’ve banned the boys from the ground at this point and we’ll be talking with the leadership group tomorrow.”
Cricket club president Ryan Kettle said he was devastated and called on the football club to get rid of those responsible.
“The assumption is it’s either players or supporters of the senior footy club,” he said.
“I would call it mad Monday celebrations gone out of control. Hopefully this is contained to a few idiots that will hopefully get the boot as soon as possible.”
Ms Cornish said it was unclear whether any players were actually driving the car but they would investigate.
“We need to find out the facts first … we need to find out who’s done what and why before we even think about sanctions,” she said.
“We still don’t know if it’s the actual players. The footage shows the players standing around the car … we’re not sure about the drivers – this is the problem.”
Palm Beach Police Station officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant Leanne Major said police were aware of the incident and had left a message for the cricket club.
“No official complaint has been made by the cricket club … at this point in time.”
