VARIETY is the spice of life.

For beer brewers, variety is also crucial in building your markets and the team at Burleigh Brewing have a unique way of seeing how their “varietal beers” fare with the public by serving them up at the tasting bar at the brewery in Ern Harley Drive, West Burleigh.

The crew, lead by master brewer Brennan Fielding, have a pilot plant where they develop their own unique blends, known as A Bit on the Side. Cheeky by name and cheeky in nature, this smallbatch plant is only served up at the bar along with the regular brews from Burleigh Brewing.

Burleigh’s commercial and community engagement manager Scott Gillies says, aside from the regular Burleigh beers, they rotate at least two special Bit On The Side brews through the bar every fortnight, giving the public a unique opportunity to sample some distinctly different drops.

“We tend to follow the season and, coming out of winter when we were making a few dark beers and stouts, we are now going into summer styles and there are some interesting brews coming up,” Scott says.

“If you try a small batch beer that you like on tap, you can get it in one of our 1.9L growler refillable bottles to take home and enjoy.

“When you finish that drop, clean out the growler and bring it back for a refill.”

The brewery is preparing a German bock (dark beer), which will be ready by the end of the month, as well as brewing a special German dunkel beer for the annual Brisbane Oktoberfest, which will also be available on tap at the brewery in October.

The brewery bar is open Wednesday and Thursday 3pm to 6pm, Friday from 3pm to 8.30pm and Sunday from 2pm to 8pm. On Fridays and Sundays they have a food truck and live music too.

Venture to the brewery and treat yourself to a Bit On The Side. You might find it challenging or you might fall in love with what’s on offer.
