PUTTING OUR CITY ON THE WORLD STAGE

- PETER BEATTIE

THE Commonwealth Games are much, much more than a festival of international sport.

Since I became GOLDOC Chairman 16 months ago, I have lost count of how many people have started conversations by reminding me how the 1982 edition of the Games transformed Brisbane in ways no one imagined.

They remember where they were when ‘Deek’ won the marathon and how they cheered Raelene Boyle and Tracey Wickham to glorious victory on the track and in the pool.

And they marveled at the way the Games had put their city on the world stage in such glittering fashion through the efforts of so many people who achieved beyond their known limits.

Brisbane 1982 was outstanding. It was a job well done and a Games thoroughly enjoyed; the memories of which will never leave those who were there.

And to think we have it all coming our way again in just 189 days’ time should send a tingle up our collective spines.

GC2018 will be a mighty task born of a grand vision and a life experience not to be missed.

IT IS A DEFINING POINT IN TIME FOR OUR CITY AND STATE AND A SHINING MOMENT IN ALL OUR LIVES ...

The Games will be showcased to 1.5 billion people around the Commonwealth.

It will be the biggest marketing opportunity in Queensland’s history and we are determined to take maximum advantage for the Gold Coast, Queensland and Australia.

The momentum of anticipation is building that is undeniable as we prepare to ‘share the dream’ of the Games. It is a defining point in time for our city and state and a shining moment in all our lives.
