RE: Bellwether comments about making separate a local government area for Surfers Paradise, Southport and Broadbeach, he/she obviously doesn’t realise the negative impact on the rest of the Gold Coast that missing out on all the rates revenue that is currently generated by these high-density residential and retail areas. I believe that they currently account for about one third of all rates collected on the Gold Coast, so being able to spend that in their precincts would be an enormous boost not like now when these monies are mostly spent on other areas. I would suggest to be careful of what your wish list is

WHILE Usain Bolt appears to be a thorough gentleman, the nine seconds events he competes in are ludicrous when compared with most other events.
How do the athletes feel that compete in real events like the marathon, pentathlon, heptathlon, triathlon and even the 10,000m events which require real training and incredible dedication.

OF THE 24 million population of Oz, 15.7 million are eligible voters. The cost of this exercise, was $122 million. That means that every voter was slugged $7.77, whether they voted or not. That sum could have built more schools or even a hospital. Our POLLIES sure know how to rip us off. I wonder how many actually voted.

INTERESTING cartoon in the Bulletin about Abbot’s mouthguard. Perhaps all those who vote No! Should go around wearing mouth guards, protecting themselves from the head butting Yes voters?

AS TWO of the thousands of travelling public on Monday who were caught in the chaos at Sydney airport, we were travelling Launceston to Coolangatta (via Sydney) when we became pawns in the chaos.
With luggage missing on arrival at Coolangatta we can only praise the Virgin employee who remained calm (just as all Virgin staff we encountered) and had our luggage delivered to our home that evening. This would have been replicated around the country as these people did their employers proud.

Sorry all, the apathetic or “She’ll be right Mate” attitude in Oz has ensured our assets have been sold to the highest bidder by our pollies in the name of more competition or other imaginary advantages.
The only revenue that will be left for the consolidated pot will be taxes, fines and levies and the average Aussie is already at breaking point to fund more bureaucracy. It is biting us on the arse and we are too far down the track to reverse rising electricity, water and road costs, all elements that should be considered sacrosanct and in the national interest. What else can we sell, the cupboard’s nearly bare?
Buy back what should be public utilities and infrastructure” and invest in the future not continually divest ourselves of our assets!
