Purcell tip to pick up reins

- LEO SCHLINK

WARRNAMBOOL trainer Aaron Purcell has emerged as a leading contender to take over suspended Ciaron Maher’s racing operation.

It is understood Purcell has the support of several owners involved with Maher’s stable.

Maher was this week suspended for six months and fined $75,000 over the ownership of five of his horses, including Group 1 winner Azkadellia, which stewards allege were actually owned by renowned Gold Coast conman Peter Foster.

The Caulfield Cupwinning horseman has until Sunday night to negotiate the transfer of his team to a trainer approved by stewards or the splitting of his stable to a number of trainers.

It is understood Maher’s assistant trainer David Eustace is likely to draw support from owners.

Stewards rejected approaches for Maher’s brother Declan and Eustace to stand in while he serves his ban because they do not have the appropriate licensing.

It now appears likely that Purcell, subject to stewards’ approval, will receive a sizeable portion of Maher’s team.

Purcell, who has enjoyed success both on the flat and over jumps, has been training since 2001, having worked at studs and stables in England, France and New Zealand.

He has trained a Grand Annual Steeplechase winner, Ginolad, and has excelled with a number of imports, including Swacadelic, Guizot, Haylaman and St Jean.

It is understood most of Maher’s team will remain at Caulfield, depending on negotiations with owners and stewards.
