CHILDREN are not getting the education they deserve. First Labor decided that all children should have a computer or a calculator. A child needs to learn how to count without a calculator in its hand.

Second, to learn to write a child needs a pen or pencil in its hand, and the teacher needs to be able to show the children how to form the words, and sound them. If you want to get a job, you must be able to fill your application forms in.

Third, wherever you are going to work you must be able to read, and not many teachers teach reading. They show children how to access information on the computer but not how to read it properly. MAUREEN BEACH

BRISBANE has the unions preventing a reliable train service.

The Gold Coast has highrise building workers protesting about development and people will still vote for the union-backed Labor Party or is it the union backed by the Labor Party people voted for? ROD WATSON

INSTEAD of announcing the promotion of Australia’s foray into the space industry and technology, Mr Turnbull should muster the courage to look into the feasibility of nuclear power in order to provide clean, cost effective and affordable energy for Australia.

Like our good fortune in having great and abundant resources of coal, gas and fossil fuels, Australia is blessed with abundant sources of uranium to power our own nuclear power stations instead of exporting all of these resources for other countries to flourish and grow rich.

How stupid is that? DAVID CHAN

HAVING lived at Dubai Marina I can tell you one car park for a twobedroom unit is absurd.

Dubai is a good deal more transport friendly than the Gold Coast but the car culture is as real as ours.

Unless you want people trekking 3km from the only available car park in highrise precincts adjust the town planning laws.

It should be one bedroom equals one car park – then the only problem will be fixing the roads. BARRY C, CARRARA

WE ELECT people to our Parliament to govern this country and yet they cannot make a decision on the same-sex marriage issue. Could it be neither of the party leaders want to see a conscious vote where our politicians vote with their ideals and not a political allegiance?

We may want them to vote that way on every issue. Who knows, the country might run much better. WAYNE

WENT for dinner Sunday night at Broadbeach.

I’m at a loss to describe council’s upgrade. About 30 per cent of parking spaces vanished, paid parking everywhere that extends to 7pm.

Restaurant owners all agree it hasn’t recovered since this poorly planned upgrade.

Council needs to understand locals support these restaurants more than tourists.

Council is driving locals somewhere else and that’s a shame. Does anyone at council think about locals, besides Peter Young? RADISH
